Grand Cayman with Kids — The Family Rental Car Guide
Updated 2026-04-21
Which car, by family size
Two adults + one small kid: economy (Toyota Corolla, Honda Fit) is plenty. Two adults + two kids + luggage: mid-size sedan minimum, or a 5-seater SUV if you've got strollers and beach gear. Two adults + three or more kids, or multi-generational trip: 7-seater SUV (Toyota Highlander, Audi Q7) or a 9-seater passenger van. At Rodney's, our 7-seater SUVs and vans are the family-trip workhorses — air-conditioned, automatic, and sized for real luggage rather than the marketing photos.
Car seats
Cayman Islands law requires child restraints for all kids under 12. You have two options: bring your own car seats (free on most airlines as checked luggage), or rent from Rodney's for a small per-day fee. Bringing your own means guaranteed fit and no surprises. Mention car seats when you book so we can confirm availability — in high season, we sometimes run out of booster seats specifically.
Kid-friendly beaches you'll want to drive to
Seven Mile Beach's Public Beach (at Governors) has bathrooms, a lifeguard, and the calmest water for tiny kids. Rum Point (50–60 minutes away) is a destination day — shallow, clear, and with a restaurant. Starfish Point (15 minutes from Rum Point) is accessible only by boat from Kaibo or by a sandy beach walk — worth the effort for elementary-age kids who'll lose their minds over actual starfish. Smith Cove (5 minutes from George Town) has snorkeling that works for beginner swimmers — bring goggles.
Activities that justify the rental
Cayman Turtle Centre (West Bay, 15 minutes from Seven Mile Beach) is the quintessential Cayman kid activity — touching turtles, a predator tank, and a water play area. Camana Bay (10 minutes from mid-SMB) has the tower climb and rotating family events. Pedro St. James Castle (25 minutes) works for older kids and the drive through South Sound. Take the car — public buses to these don't run on reliable schedules for families.
The drive-on-the-left reality check
Grand Cayman drives on the LEFT (British-style), with the steering wheel on the right side of the vehicle. Most US and Canadian parents adjust within 20–30 minutes of careful driving. The trickiest moments are pulling out of hotel parking lots and roundabouts — glance right, then left, then right again. Speed limits are 25–40 mph, so you're never moving fast. Tell the kids what's happening so the first sharp turn doesn't panic them.
What to pack in the trunk
Collapsible beach wagon (worth every dollar for hauling stuff across sand), reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen damages coral and some beaches ban it), snorkel gear for each kid big enough to use it, a soft cooler, phone chargers, a whiteboard or two for car-game emergencies. Leave space for the stroller.
What to skip
Don't waste rental-car days at aquarium-style activities that are cheaper at home. Don't try to see the entire island in one day with young kids — plan 2–3 days in one area at a time. Don't leave valuables in the car at any beach parking lot; use the trunk or bring them onto the beach.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best rental car for a family in Grand Cayman?
- For a family of four with luggage, a 5-seater SUV (Toyota RAV4 or Jeep Wrangler) is the sweet spot. For families of 5+ or multi-generational trips, a 7-seater SUV (Toyota Highlander, Audi Q7) or 9-seater van is worth the upgrade. Mid-size sedans work for tight-budget families of four with minimal gear.
- Do I need to bring car seats to Grand Cayman?
- Cayman law requires child restraints for kids under 12. You can either bring your own (free on most airlines as checked luggage — recommended for guaranteed fit) or rent from Rodney's for a small per-day fee. Mention car seats when you book so we can confirm availability.
- Is Grand Cayman safe to drive with young children?
- Yes. Speed limits are low (25–40 mph), roads are well-paved, and Caymanians are patient drivers. The main adjustment for North American parents is driving on the left with a right-hand-drive steering wheel — most adjust within 20–30 minutes. Plan short drives the first day and build up.
- What is the minimum age to rent a car in Cayman for a family trip?
- The minimum age to rent at Rodney's is 25, with a maximum of 75. All drivers must have held a valid license for at least 1 year. Additional drivers are welcome — present at pickup, same age and license requirements.
