How to Drive to Rum Point from Seven Mile Beach
Updated 2026-04-21
The short version
Rum Point is a calm, shallow beach on Grand Cayman's North Side, about a 50–60 minute drive from Seven Mile Beach. Two routes get you there — scenic (via Bodden Town and the coast) or direct (across the middle of the island). A rental car is the only practical way to do a Rum Point day: there's no Uber in Cayman and taxis for the round trip run US$120+.
Route A: The scenic coastal route (recommended)
From Seven Mile Beach, head south on West Bay Road, past George Town, and onto Shamrock Road through Prospect and Savannah. Continue east on the Queen's Highway through Bodden Town — stop for a Tortuga rum cake if you haven't already — then turn left onto Frank Sound Road, which cuts north across the island to the Rum Point junction. Total drive: about 55 minutes. You'll see more of Grand Cayman than you would on the direct route.
Route B: The direct cross-island route
Head south on West Bay Road, then east on Esterley Tibbetts Highway past Camana Bay. Connect to Frank Sound Road, which takes you directly across the middle of the island to Rum Point. About 45 minutes of driving — faster, but less interesting scenery. Use this on the return drive when everyone's sunburned and tired.
Parking at Rum Point
Free parking at the main Rum Point public lot (managed by the Rum Point Club). It's a sand-and-gravel lot with ~100 spaces — arrives full by 11 AM in high season, so aim to arrive before 10:30 AM or after 3 PM. There's a smaller overflow lot at Kaibo, about a 5-minute walk up the beach.
Don't miss Kaibo on the way back
Kaibo Yacht Club (half a mile east of the Rum Point parking) has one of Grand Cayman's best beach restaurants — upstairs for higher-end dinner, downstairs for casual lunch. If you're doing Rum Point as an all-day trip, plan lunch at Kaibo downstairs around 2 PM when the beach crowd thins out.
What to pack in the rental
Towel, swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen, snacks (the Rum Point Club restaurant is fine but overpriced), water, phone charger for the drive back. Rum Point has shallow, glass-clear water — bring snorkel gear if you have it. Children's floaties are worth packing if you've got little kids.
Which rental car?
Any Rodney's vehicle handles the drive — the full route is paved. For family-of-four day trips, a 5-seater SUV or 7-seater SUV gives you cargo room for chairs, coolers, and floaties. If you're combining Rum Point with Stingray City via Kaibo, a Jeep Wrangler fits the vibe and has the ride height for the last half-mile of North Side road.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does it take to drive to Rum Point from Seven Mile Beach?
- About 45–60 minutes depending on route and traffic. The direct route (Esterley Tibbetts → Frank Sound Road) is fastest at ~45 minutes. The scenic coastal route through Bodden Town takes about 55–60 minutes but shows you more of the island.
- Is Rum Point parking free?
- Yes. The main Rum Point public lot is free and has about 100 spaces. Arrive before 10:30 AM in high season to guarantee a spot. Kaibo has a smaller overflow lot a 5-minute walk east.
- Can I take a taxi from Seven Mile Beach to Rum Point?

- What's the best rental car for a Rum Point day trip?
- Any of our vehicles handle the fully-paved drive. For families with snorkel gear and beach chairs, a 5- or 7-seater SUV gives you the cargo space. Solo travelers and couples do fine in an economy car like the Toyota Corolla or Honda Fit.
