How to Drive to Stingray City — The Rental-Car Guide
Updated 2026-04-21
First things first: you can't drive to Stingray City itself
Stingray City is a sandbar about 2 miles offshore in Grand Cayman's North Sound. The only way there is by boat — what your rental car gets you is a choice of three departure points on-island, each with its own vibe, drive time, and parking situation. If you've got a family-owned car rental from Rodney's, you pick the dock that fits your day.
Option 1: Safehaven / Morgan's Harbour (West Bay) — the most popular
From Seven Mile Beach, head north on West Bay Road, past the Ritz-Carlton and Kimpton Seafire, and turn right into Morgan's Harbour / Safehaven marina. It's about a 15–20 minute drive from the middle of Seven Mile Beach. Most of the biggest tour operators (Captain Marvin's, Red Sail Sports, Captain Bryan's) leave from here. Free parking on-site, but arrive 30 minutes before your tour — the marina fills up fast in high season.
Option 2: Rum Point / Kaibo (North Side) — the scenic option
If you're already planning a Rum Point beach day (and you should be — see our Rum Point drive guide), several smaller operators leave from the Kaibo Yacht Club. It's a 45–55 minute drive from Seven Mile Beach through Bodden Town, but you'll get a shorter boat ride out to the sandbar plus a full afternoon at Rum Point's beach restaurant on the same trip. This combo works best with a 5-seater SUV or Jeep — the North Side road has a few rough patches.
Option 3: George Town (downtown) — for cruise passengers
If you're visiting on a cruise ship, the tender dock is in George Town and several operators run cruise-day tours that leave straight from the port. If you've rented a car for your cruise day (our Mary Street office is a 5-minute walk from the tender dock), you can drive to a North Sound dock instead for a shorter, less-crowded tour — just watch your return-to-ship deadline.
What to pack in the rental
Towel, swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen, a waterproof phone pouch (tours include photos, but phones rule), and cash for tour tips. Don't leave valuables in the car — use the trunk or bring them on the boat. Rodney's vehicles include A/C, which matters more than you'd think on the drive back after four hours in the sun.
When to go
Morning tours (8–10 AM departures) have calmer water and fewer boats at the sandbar. Afternoon tours have warmer water but more crowd on the sandbar. Book the tour and your rental car together — popular tours sell out 48–72 hours ahead in high season (December–April).
Frequently asked questions
- Can I drive directly to Stingray City?
- No. Stingray City is a sandbar in the North Sound, not on the main island. Your rental car gets you to a boat dock (Safehaven, Kaibo, or George Town), and the boat gets you to the sandbar.
- Where do I park for Stingray City tours?
- Free on-site parking at Morgan's Harbour / Safehaven Marina (West Bay). Kaibo Yacht Club has free parking for patrons. George Town tender-dock parking is metered and limited — prefer Safehaven or Kaibo if you have a rental car.
- How far is Stingray City from Seven Mile Beach by car?
- The closest dock (Safehaven/Morgan's Harbour) is 15–20 minutes from mid-Seven Mile Beach. The Kaibo/Rum Point dock is 45–55 minutes on the scenic route. Either way, add 30–90 minutes on the boat depending on the tour.
- Do I need a 4x4 to drive to the Stingray City docks?
- No. Safehaven is on paved road the whole way. Kaibo is on the paved Queen's Highway through Bodden Town, with a few rougher patches near the end where a 5-seater SUV feels better than a compact sedan. No off-road driving is permitted in Cayman under any rental agreement.
